It took nearly seven months, but the town's planning board has finalized a recommendation for the town board on a revised conservation reserve district. The town board will consider the planning board's recommendation when it meets Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. In May, residents who noticed that conservation reserve districts were on both ends of Sunset Beach island complained, said town administrator Linda Fluegel. To make matters worse, an investigation into the ordinance that created such a district in 1993 had the town's attorney seeking an outside legal opinion as to whether the residents could challenge the validity of the district if the town never gave proper notification to adjoining property owners. The legality issue was settled, giving the planning board the go-ahead to clarify its ordinance.
My grandmother's wisdom came from experience. As a teenager in late nineteenth century Wisconsin, she had cleared tons of rocks from fields and hauled countless buckets of water on the family farm. If she had to select just one modern technology, she said, she'd choose running water. But electricity was a close second. No wonder. Without electricity, modern life reverts to her childhood: no lights, refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, radio, television, computers, safe running water, or mechanized equipment for homes, schools, shops, hospitals, offices, and factories. Billions Live in Darkness Incredibly, this is what life is still like every day for 2 billion people in developing countries. Viewed at night from outer space, Africa really is the Dark Continent: only 10 percent of its 700 million people regularly have electricity.
RedEnvelope gives your home an inviting look and feel for the upcoming holidays with these stylish items: Gingko candles. Celebrate autumn with the look of golden leaves embellishing gold-leaf ginkgo candles. In history, ginkgo leaves represent fellowship and harmony. Each unscented candle measures 3 inches wide and almost 4 inches tall, and burns for 45 hours. $24, set of two. Amaryllis exotica. Instead of tried-and-true red amaryllis, try peachy-cream petals with subtle pink accents. Add water and you'll dream of the tropics when flowers appear in a few weeks. The bulb is already planted in a round, chocolate-colored earthenware pot from Portugal and tied with green satin ribbon. $42. Lugano candelabra. Together they make a bold and brilliant centerpiece; apart they perform a modern dance across the table.
Immokalee Regional Airport is seen as a catalyst to economic development and diversification. Factories on airport property have been called essential to build up a middle class in that rural community. After years of false starts, including some would-be manufacturing tenants with dubious real-world business potential, comes a proposal for a company known as C-Tech making parts for modular homes that take the concept of pre-fab to the next level of strength and quality. Some would say the plan is tailor-made for Immokalee, which could use good jobs as well as good, economical housing. Yet, Collier County commissioners balk at $1.7 million in subsidies to help make the $16.3 million project possible. They say the average job pay of $37,000 a year is only 6 percent above the countywide average.
There are a number of perspectives that, together, make up the picture. One perspective deals with process efficiency -- a technological issue -- another with the structure of the economy -- how much of our economy is fundamentally energy-hungry. Either way, improving energy efficiency will largely rely on energy becoming more expensive. It will allow us to improve our supply-side and demand-side technology, but also encourage us to shift our economy away from energy-intensive industries. On the structural perspective: while resources are decreasing as a percentage of GDP contributor (mining contributes 7% and 5% of employment), it remains the largest contributor to energy consumption. The mining industry consumes only 6% of the country's energy, but this compares to 3,8% of energy consumption by the services industry, which contributes 65% of GDP and 52% of employment.
