Franklin board member tapped as chairman of Venango tech center ...

Franklin School Board member Patricia Moore was named chairman of the Venango Technology Center's Joint Committee at its reorganization meeting Tuesday.

Kathy Karl of the Oil City School Board was elected vice-chairman, and Dwight Proper of the Titusville School Board was elected treasurer.

All of the votes were unanimous.

Moore replaced Forest Area School Board member John Mehalic at the head of the table.

The committee also unanimously agreed to retain Joseph J. Liotta III as its solicitor and to pay him a retainer of $135 a month.

It was the first meeting for Franklin school district Superintendent Ronald Paranick, who will serve a one-year term as the center's chief school administrator. He takes over from Forest Area Superintendent Duane Vicini, who served in the post for the past year.

Surprise: Americans lining up to do “jobs Americans won’t do”

Greg Bonifacio heard about the job openings on television and brought his passport, his Colorado driver's license, his Social Security card and even a color photograph of himself as a young Naval officer to prove his military service.

"I don't want to hassle with any identification problems because of my last name," said Bonifacio, a 59- year-old Thornton resident of Filipino heritage.

SUNSET BEACH, N.C.: Planning board OKs preservation

It took nearly seven months, but the town's planning board has finalized a recommendation for the town board on a revised conservation reserve district.

The town board will consider the planning board's recommendation when it meets Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

In May, residents who noticed that conservation reserve districts were on both ends of Sunset Beach island complained, said town administrator Linda Fluegel.

To make matters worse, an investigation into the ordinance that created such a district in 1993 had the town's attorney seeking an outside legal opinion as to whether the residents could challenge the validity of the district if the town never gave proper notification to adjoining property owners.

The legality issue was settled, giving the planning board the go-ahead to clarify its ordinance.

Deluxe modular homes offer high quality for less

PASCAGOULA -- Having an entire customized home built in one day is a homeowner's dream come true, and two families along Beach Boulevard saw it happen Monday.

Pelican Bay Custom Homes, along with New Era Construction, were at two sites along Beach Boulevard constructing high-end modular homes.

The homes are built with 2-by-6-foot boards, and they feature a hardwood wrap and cement siding.

They are engineered as well as a "stick home" and can be built to match or exceed hurricane building codes, Pelican Bay Construction Manager and Vice President Bob Smith said.

"They're made to withstand 140 to 160 mile-per-hour winds," Smith said.

Carl Megehee smiled as he watched construction on his new modular home, which was going up on the same spot his old house stood before Hurricane Katrina destroyed it.

NH group seeks help for flood victims

CONCORD, N.H. A New Hampshire group organized to help people flooded out of their homes in May is asking for volunteers and donations to help 200 families repair or replace their homes.

Daniel Steinbach -- who chairs the fund-raising effort -- says 25 of the families still are not back in their homes seven months after the disaster.

The New Hampshire Statewide Disaster Recovery Steering Committee is holding a fund-raiser next Thursday in Concord to raise money. Steinbach says they need money to buy materials as well as volunteers to do the repairs. He says the families have exhausted their own resources.

Deb Gaudette of Goffstown said she had enough insurance to pay for a new foundation but no money to put a modular home onto it. She said her mother loaned her the money for a downpayment but she doesn't have enough to pay the balance and get the modular home moved onto the foundation.
