Only a dream, but it all seemed so real

Even during a vacation trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York for the field hockey Final Four (NCAA Division III), reality and the issues with which we wrestle in Centre County intrude.

They came to me in a dream, inspired, perhaps, by the eerie evening sky after a mid-November downpour or by standing in the wind-driven rain for five hours through both semifinal games.

Or maybe it was the Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard's exquisite semi-dry Riesling that I sipped from the elegant plastic cup in the motel room -- there's not much else to do up there in the off-tourist season -- before dozing off.

Whatever the genesis, I woke up in a cold sweat and scribbled what I could remember on the bedside tablet, hoping to find meaning -- other than the value of temperance -- in my nighttime vision.

Big sister's quick action helps save baby boy

The quick thinking of a 12-year-old Dunbar Township girl may have saved the life of her baby brother when she wrapped him in blankets and helped to hand him out the window of her family's burning home.

Shortly after midnight Friday, Robert Gratson, of Dunbar Township, awoke to the smell of wood burning, but in the mountainous area of Dunbar Township, he was used to the smell and fell back to sleep.

Five minutes later, the smoke odor was stronger, and he heard popping and crackling noises. When Gratson got up to investigate, he saw that the front porch of his modular home was on fire.

A volunteer firefighter for years, Gratson was surprised by the ferocity of the blaze. He ran to grab his keys and wake up his family.

Goodbye Cable TV, Hello Fiber-Optic Broadband Television

She sounded nice, so I assured her that it wasn't her fault that I was dropping Cablevision for my TV service in favor of Verizon's brand new FiOS TV fiber-optic TV service. We chatted a bit longer and then, as I requested, she terminated my cable service.

No going back now.

Not that I would want to go back. Making the move to fiber TV is one of the smartest I've made in my technical life.

It was not the easiest decision to make, and getting fiber TV into my home was a bit more complicated than I anticipated.

Of course, I'd been warned — by Verizon, no less.
