Column: Emerging markets still beckon

This past week, Barclays Capital added an exchange-traded note that tracks the Indian stock market. ETNs are senior, unsecured debt securities issued by the London-based bank that are traded like a stock, and where returns are linked to the performance of a market index.

Philippe El-Asmar, managing director and head of investor solutions for Barclays Capital, said the Indian-linked ETN is for people that "understand emerging markets are more risky, but realize its a good way to diversify their portfolio." He said the company has seen increasing interest this past year for financial instruments that track Russia, India and China.

"We're finding ways for them to get easier access," he said.

And more are on the way. The New York Stock Exchange hopes to roll out new ETF products once it closes its acquisition of Paris-based Euronext NV.

What to do if you want to buy a yurt

Depending on one's credit, it is usually easy enough to find financing for a conventional house. But what about a yurt?

Yurts, circular structures still built by the Mongols, occupy a tiny, but growing, niche in residential architecture, a segment in which owners take satisfaction in the knowledge that no one within miles lives in a house like theirs.

Kenya Makes Business Sense of Renewable Energy

The 12th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change came to an end in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, recently with little mention of cleaner sources of energy.

This was troubling, given the huge potential for such energy sources in Africa -- and the fact that a third of the world's population, the bulk coming from the continent, currently has no access to electricity.

Holiday customs come from various origins

During the first week of December, as part of the routine of decorating our home for the holiday season, we placed the Advent wreath in its usual place, arranged in the middle of the dining room table.

Because our wreath is modular for storage purposes, it could be arranged in several formats, so my 6-year-old grandson asked the logical question, Why do we put it out in a circle? It put me on the pattern of thinking about some of our customs, especially those that blend secular and religious traditions.

The wreath, in its circular format, can be traced in several directions, one of which leads to the ancient celebration of the solstice. Both the use of evergreens and the circular (sun) shape reminded people in the pre-Christian world, especially northern parts of Europe, that winter would not be as endless as it seemed.
